NEW SCHEDULE COMING SOON – ALL CLASSES. D’URBANVALLE, DURBANVILLE.
I have been doing mosaic since 2000 and have a library of over 60 mosaic publications of which I have read each one from cover to cover. I ran a mosaic factory doing large scale murals for a number of years and taught classes there for a few years, as well as teach mosaic at a prestigious Cape Town school. I studied mosaic at the Ravenna School of Mosaic and also under Giulio Menossi in Udine where I learned the double indirect method from the acclaimed Spilimbergo School of Mosaic. This exciting art-form is in my blood, and if you are willing to put in the effort and take instruction, I will teach you some of what I have learned.

Mosaic is about more than just arranging tesserae onto a substrate. It is also about making your mosaic last for years and years without you having to keep repairing it. And there are so many ways to achieve a pleasing end-result. Methods range from direct, indirect, double indirect, Ravenna method, Spilimbergo method and so many more. And the materials available are vast and varied including various tiles, ceramics, natural stone, stained glass, smalti, to name a few. And tools, so many options. Then there are substrates, wood, cement, ceramic, 3D shapes, the possibilities are endless. You can pretty much mosaic onto anything, if you can harden it. Then, of course, there are situational factors such as heat, moisture and light that your mosaic will be exposed to in its home in your garden or in your home. Therefore, you need to do it right, to avoid tears down the line when your mosaic falls apart. We often hear the stories of wood warping outside, tes falling off or grout falling out. Or you see a lovely piece of work, but something just does not look right, but you can’t quite put your finger on it. Colours or shapes that just don’t work. Still wonder why you need to take a class?
Tailored to your needs
I offer classes in technique for direct method, 3D (also plaster of Paris molds) mosaic and hammer and hardie. I will have a social class once a week accommodating 4 students. This will start from late 2023. It would have been sooner, but Covid put an end to those plans. So, I am exploring Zoom as an option too. There will be garden paver casting with wooden block frames. If you are interested in any classes, please pop me a note from the top of this page. I teach all the techniques listed in the "Why you need ..." section, so I will be happy to accommodate any and all requests. More specialized classes will be on a one on one basis. This is a fun studio where creativity and artistic expression is encouraged.
